The Lake Winnipeg Foundation

In addition to providing funding for scientific research, the Lake Winnipeg Foundation also supports educational initiatives.

“The Lake Winnipeg Foundation will support any endeavor that restricts and reduces the Phosphorus in the water and promotes the reuse of Phosphorus for plant life,” says Boyd.

One of these initiatives is the Ecole St. Avila Down the Drain project. Beginning in the 2008-2009 school year this five year project was started with the idea to improve the grounds at Ecole St. Avila Down the Drain project. Beginning in the 2008-2009 school year this five year project was started with the idea to improve the grounds at Ecole St. Avila which were plagued by drainage problems.

Rather than utilizing traditional drainage methods which would see nutrient-laden runoff routed directly into Lake Winnipeg, the school engaged the staff, students and parents to come up with a more environmentally friendly option.

What they ended up creating was a bio-retention system that utilizes bio swales, berms and dry creek beds to channel water into a rain garden where it is absorbed by Manitoba plants and grasses.

“It’s quite an interesting project,” says Boyd, adding that Down the Drain is a great way to both educate and get kids involved in maintaining the health of Lake Winnipeg.

The Lake Winnipeg Foundation is also hoping to increase awareness and interest in the lake through a number of special initiatives and events – the largest being the Walk for Water.

Last year participants in the annual walk-a-thon raised over $43,000 in funds for the Foundation and its efforts, this year they are hoping to raise even more money with the addition of the inaugural Golf Fore Water tournament which is set to take place on August 30th.

“And if people can’t walk we encourage them to come up with their own fundraising events,” says Boyd, who fondly recalls one child who went door to door collecting pledges for a read-a-thon where all monies raised were donated to the Foundation.

Another interesting initiative is The Lake-a short film competition held in partnership with the Gimli Film Festival. Film makers are invited to create a five minute tribute to or history of the lake. Each film will be judged on cinematic quality and if it captures the essence of Lake Winnipeg- the top 10 films be screened at the film festival.

2010 Water Levels

Over the summer, precipitation was heavy and inflows into Lake Winnipeg increased dramatically. Manitoba Hydro’s control facility at Jenpeg has been at maximum discharge since July 1. Lake levels would have been up to 60 cm (2 feet) higher going into the October storm without this extra discharge over the summer.

Despite the increased outflow capacity, Lake Winnipeg was about 48 cm (1.6 feet) above the long-term average for this time of year simply because more precipitation fell and flowed into the lake than could flow out of it.

Over the last seven years, Manitoba has experienced some of the wettest years on record.

Lake Winnipeg Water Levels

In October 2010, a wind storm caused flooding and property damage in low-lying areas of Lake Winnipeg’s south basin. Record-setting low barometric pressure in our province, and the accompanying extreme winds, resulted in the strongest storm ever recorded in the Midwest.

People looked to Manitoba Hydro, asking how we determine and manage lake levels.

Hunting Assignment – Manitoba Bear Hunting

I could tell that if he would just stand up I could…  Certain features like bowed out front legs. Slow ponderous movements and outsized oversized hump indicates the makings of a big, big bear.
As the big Manitoba bear turned his head from side to side he occasionally looked square at us.  I was watching him through the rifle scope.
I tightened the rifle sling high on my left arm and in a sitting position scooted out and down the hill a couple of yards or meters for a clear shot.  Still sitting I put the cross hairs on the bear. And danged if he was not watching me all along.  Wow I thought, maybe I am not going to get a running shot after all.  But the bear seemed completely disinterested.  I could not a shoulder, so I figured on breaking the neck.  The flat footed faithful little 270 was rock-steady on his nose – and we waited.  And waited.  Finally the bear turned his head and I touched her off.  The bear collapses as if he had been electrocuted. As a matter of fact, I had the sensation that he flopped so hard that he bounced a little.
The bear dropped spine up in some real low willows, being fall time at Lake Manitoba Narrows. The Manitoba willows partially hid the bear.
The first shot it seemed had broken his neck and jaw, and the other two the bear’s shoulders.

Silent – A Still Hunter Reveals his Secrets

Still – hunting , the art of silent stalking, is an old an art as the relationship between hunter and whitetail deer , even as far back as the woolly mammoth .    In this case its all about stalking that elusive white tail deer.  And even though it continues to be both effective and productive, still hunting’s prevalence seems to be declining over the years. the victim of hunter’s busy lives , too little time to spend in the field as well the preponderance of high tech gadgetry.

Hunter and deer, however are still as well matched as they were millennium ago.  The whitetail has developed finely tuned survival skills , adapting almost anywhere that man lives in North America.  More whitetail deer are on the continent today than at any time in history -recent or not, even though more humans are hunting than ever before attesting to the deer’s highly developed abilities to survive.
