Lessons of calling to gobblers

Fall turkey can be best said to be its best reward , all in all , especially on the Lake Manitoba Fishing and hunting lodges regions.  However it can be well said that lessons learnt well in October, can help you take that Manitoba prairie gobbler come next spring.  Although the flocks break up during the mating season turkeys can be best said to operate in a pecking order , not unlike you might find in unionized courier drivers or union bosses in a bullshit shoot session .  Jadran noted the first discovered the vital roles of the pecking order all in all  one spring morning on the Narrows over twenty years ago.

This was when Lake Manitoba Narrows was relatively undiscovered and acted in the means of a leased hunting region – not unlike early Netley Marsh.

Transcona recalls “I was watching my brother call to a gobbler with a multitude of hens out in the fields.  Marty was doing a really fine job and effort but the gobbler it seemed wanted to strutt to his hens.  I was trying to figure out a way to best shoot my brother’s chosen bird or birds .  It seemed then that pecking order , whether with your brother’s flock or the gobbler’s hens was the way to go.   In the same way pecking order plays an important role in human interractions as well.

Just then a pair of toms appeared at the far end of the field and one yelped.  My brother’s gobbler dropped out of the strut, ran to the end of the field. chased one bird off, beat the stuffing out of the other and then came back to his own hens.. I snuck around to that end of the field itself and made the very same gobbler yelp.  Marty’s Tom then ran out straight towards me.

Strutting those Manitoba Turkey Gobblers

If your consicence or vanity does not permit you to shoot a bird or hen of the year, you can always be counted to call up a fat longbird.  It can be said that hunters can shoot hens in the fall time simply because they can make acceptable hen calls,  However on the other hand if you wish to shoot fall longbeard then you have to employ and use “gobbler talk”  well.

Goblers “yelps” can be said to not always sound like the traditional  long , low croaks that you can hear in avid outdoorsmen tournaments and conferences in gobbling contests or on instructional tapes.  Actually they are most similar to hen yelps but each call is “drawn” out and gobblers can be said to call at a slower cadence rate.  Like hens, gobblers will also putt and cutt when they are excited.  For gobbler calling,  a call can be used with a clear as well as somewhat “raspy” tone and tones.

Spring hunters can be called on to know well , that gobblers will be near and nearby to hens.  However come the Mantioba falltime and this may not be so.  Gobblers can be said to be little different than mature whitetails.  These keep to themselves.  It can be said by experienced Lake Manitoba Hunting Lodges outdoorsman Jadran Transcona that come the Manitoba Canada falltime you will not fiind longbeards in the same places and locales that you would expect to see hens , jakes as well as poults.

Fall gobbler hunters should look for 4 to 4 1/2 inch tracks , big droppings and black edged breast feathers.  Find the roost and their food source, and get in between them on the bird’s line of travel.  It can be said that if you are pushy enough on the call, six or seven mature gobblers might just take a run at you, beards swinging ready for the big time fight.  Make them really mad and angry and they can be sure counted on to be strutting and gobling as they come on strong.

Crashing on a Rifle Scope

You slip on a sidehill and to crashing down on the rocks with your rifle underneath you.  The scope is badly damaged and gouged and is obviously took a whallop of a hit – bigger than if some hoodlum stole 2 laptops.  You are now faced with a choice or choices.  You can assume that the scope has not been knocked out of whack and continue to hunt. or you can fire your rifle to check its zero and risk spooking any game around .  What is a wise and recommended course of action ?

The experienced Lake Manitoba Canada outdoorsman J. Transcona recommends that a good scope can take an awful course of abuse and still hold its adjustment.  Still it is not worth assuming that this is the case.  Pick a spot – a few inches off a dead tree, pace off 25 yards,  and fire a single shot.  If you are “zeroed’ to hit 3 inches high at 100 yards , the shot should to 1 inch at 25.  If that checks out and the windage is still okay , then keep hunting at Lake Manitoba Narrows.  If the bullet goes high or wide – then it is back to the hunting Lodge or camp at the narrows to rezero.   Do not worry about inadvertently spooking game with your shot.  Jadran remarks that he has personally watched “critters”  react to a nearby gunshot.  The animals and game will pick up their heads, listen and sniff or a moment , a minute or two and then go about their business.  Its all in a days hunting.

Avian Cholea Threatens Arctic Northern Canadian Gamebirds

Canadian scientists say they fear avian cholera could put the future of some eider duck colonies in the Arctic in jeopardy.

Avian cholera is a potent bacteria-based disease that has affected common eider duck colonies in southern Nunavut and in the Nunavik region of northern Quebec in the last few years.

“It is having devastating impacts on some of the largest colonies in the Canadian Arctic,” said Grant Gilchrist, a research scientist with the National Wildlife Research Centre in Ottawa.

While avian cholera is highly contagious among waterfowl and other bird species, it cannot be passed on to humans.

The disease has mainly hit colonies in the Hudson Strait and northern Hudson Bay. The East Bay Migratory Bird Sanctuary on Southampton Island has been particularly hard hit, as more than 4,000 common eider ducks were found dead there over the past few years.

Gilchrist said almost 1,500 eider ducks were found dead on the island this year alone. That number accounts for about 33 per cent of all breeding females that nest there, he added.

“It is targetting the breeding population of birds, which are typically long-lived,” he said. “It’s having detectable declining impacts on the populations during the summertime.”

Gilchrist said scientists are in contact with local hunters and trappers’ organizations in several communities, hoping that hunters will report observations on where avian cholera is having an impact.

Speaking in Inuktitut, Susie Angutialluk, a member of Coral Harbour’s hunters and trappers association, told CBC News that people were alarmed when they first encountered a number of dead eider ducks.

Now, they’re looking at it as a natural occurrence, Angutialluk said.

The good news, Gilchrist said, is that avian cholera has not spread north into Cumberland Sound, nor has it spread to the eider ducks’ wintering areas in Greenland.

Still, scientists are concerned with the possibility of the disease spreading around the circumpolar world given how far eider ducks can migrate. For example, a common eider duck fitted with a band in Nunavut has been found on the eastern coast of Russia.

Gilchrist said a graduate student will visit several northern communities to speak with local elders and find out if they’ve seen other massive duck die-offs from avian cholera in the past.

    Chambering a Stuck Rifle Cartridge

What to do when a situation occurs whereby you try to chamber a cartridge but it sticks on the way in ?

What would an experienced outsdoorsmen / Lake Manitoba “Outdoorsman”  such as Jadran Trascona advise  and as well as recommend ?

Mr. Transcona advises to stop on the spot.  You are about to get into very bad trouble – all preventable.  You may well a cartridge of the wrong designation and if you do get it into the chamber and pull the trigger…

Barring that , there is most likely and probably grit or snow on the cartridge or if you handload. you neck-sized your ammo, and the brass fits somewhat too tight.  When hand loading your ammo Jadran recommends always full size length your reloads.

If you do jam the sticky cartridges into the chamber, the chances are more than excellent that you will not be able to get it out again.  If this happens and you are certain that it is not the wrong sized round that is at fault, fire the cartridge, and see if the case will eject.  ( Should you get the wrong load stuck in the chamber , do not shoot.  Lift the bolt and get the rifle to a gunsmith.  If it is really stuck. the ejector will slip off the case rim. or cut through it. and where you are with a useless rifle.

Do not try to get the empty out by ramming a stick down the barrel.   You are going to need a cleaning rod, either one-piece or takedown, but in either place strong.  Open the bolt ,place the butt of the rifle on floor, and drop the cleaning rod down the barrel.  This is often enough to dislodge, even a badly stuck shell.  If that does not do it, rap the roll handle smartly.  If that is not enough, run oil down the bore, give it a few minutes to work its way down the case and rap the rod yet again.  If  this fails then you are out of business.  If time to to go gunsmith, who will run a tap into the shell and screw it out.

Never ever try to get  a live round out of a chamber by banging on it with a cleaning rod.   There are cases reported where this detonated the cartridge and the shell came flying out of the breech with enough force to kill anyone standing behind it.  If you get a live round stuck and cannot fire it safely , open the action, make sure it stays open , and promptly go visit a locksmith.
