Canadian Snow Geese Hunting

Hunters need not hang up their shotguns just yet, there’s still plenty of wing shooting to enjoy with the shotguns, no limit on birds harvested and extended shooting hours, hunters have a much better chance of success.

I remember my first hunt during this conservation season several years ago with waterfowl guide David Cox of Palmetto Guide Service. Cox had been guiding goose hunts on ranches on the Katy and Garwood Prairies along the Texas coast for years. We set out several hundred silhouettes and full body decoys, and when the local population of snow geese heard the recording of thousands of what they thought was their kind being blasted through speakers from Cox’s boom box, they were quick to set their wings and glide within shotgun ranch.

We enjoyed several hours of shooting with wave after wave of birds coming to our decoy spread and

electronic calls. But not all late hunts go so well. Cox is quick to point out that after being hunted from Canada to the Texas Coast, snow geese can be extremely difficult to decoy; but if everything is done correctly and Mother Nature provides a little wind to keep the decoy spread moving, shooting is often excellent.

“We hunt flocks of birds on several big ranches and I’ve found that being flexible is the key to good hunts during the

conservation season,” Cox said. “Most of our shooting is over green fields of rye grass this time of year, and sometimes the birds move from field to field with little notice. We have to remain mobile and ready to pull up and move with the birds.

“This time of year, when shooting gets slow, my guides and I will scout and find a concentration of birds, plan a way to get our hunters in without spooking them and enjoy some pass shooting. It’s all about being in the right place at the right time and that’s accomplished by lots of scouting.”

Good Eating

Snow geese breast are excellent eating when marinated in a 50-50 solution of Coke and Soy Sauce, with a little garlic powder, then wrapped with bacon and grilled over hot hardwood coals.

I like to butterfly the breast halves, stuff them with sausage, wrap with bacon and slow smoke for a couple of hours. Goose breast fajitas are also excellent eating when marinated in your favorite fajita seasoning and then cooked quickly in olive oil with fresh garlic.

Residue in the Bolt of Your Hunting Rifle

Next in step – if you hear a second clunk it means that your firing pin is the culprit and problem because as in getting two bad laptops in a row are against the odds of life , two bad ….. is just as unlikely.

All in all you must deal with the situation on hand and in hand.  Most likely the problem is accumulated grime and even “gunk”  inside the bolt and bolt area of the hunting rifle itself.  When the weather gets good and cold, the dirt , grime , and accumulated residues and gunk can harden and impede a or the firing pin.  Try that in a good Manitoba Prairie winter.   Hardened in the cold this stuff can harden and impede the firing pin.

The way to remove it ( assuming that you have a bolt action hunting rifle). is to take the bolt out of the receiver of the hunting rifle, unscrew the firing pin assembly , and clean the accumulated , cold hardened “crud”  out of the bolt’s interior with powder , solvent, white gas or whatever grease cutter that you have available on hand.  De-gunk the firing pin and firing pin spring and that should do it.  If you are using a lever pump or auto. you are totally out of luck until you can get to a locksmith, which is more than an excellent reason to take your lever, pump or auto to a gunsmith before hunting season and have him strip-clean the instrument.

Hunting Trips – Events Common Mishaps and Mistakes

As you read this you are probably about ready to go hunting , are thinking of hunting or planning a hunting trip or trips.    This may be your year to make the trek to our” neighbors to the North” and even to the wilds of Lake Manitoba and the interlake Lake Manitoba Narrows regions.

This may well be the year of your dreams that everything goes according to your plans and your script, or it may be a year of hunting and hunting trip no shows and disasters with poor hunting results at the end of the day or end of the trip.

To avoid this hideous trap of bad events here are some of the more common mishaps to watch out for :

1) You pull the trigger and instead of a “bang” sound you hear think.  Most likely you either have a dud primer or the primer is good but your firing pin as not struck it hard enough to set it off.

-  count to ten slowly.  You may have a hangfire , and if the round goes off with the bolt open ,deer hungting or duck hunting will be the furthest thing from your mind.  Eject the cartridge, rack in a new one, and pull the trigger again.  There is no use resnapping on the dud, because if the fault is with the primer, it very unlikely at all that a second firing of the firing pin , will set it off.

Common Eider Gamebirds

There was clear winter snow on top of Lake Manitoba and a scarf of now hung in the thin winter Manitoba air.  Its the narrows i assumed.  The snow did not surprise me at all at that point of year.  Tucked into this little bay after a long unsuccessful attempt at a Polar Bear hunt,  we were here on the whim of a single duck hunter – me.

My friends – my buddies and I were standing out observing the views looking at the snow and ice of the lake and plotting our future course .  I could see the bands of eider .    The simple explanation was that they after all were common eider – the largest ducks some indeed 23 inches long – their technical name being “  Somateria Mollissima“.    During the  breeding season these Eider birds the male is identified by having  a dark belly and a dark dark back.   It can be said that in the eclipse  they do appear as a female – dark reddish brown barred with black and black markings.  Eider birds look heavy and clumsy , but they are most fast and good divers.

Hunting Assignment – Manitoba Bear Hunting

I could tell that if he would just stand up I could…  Certain features like bowed out front legs. Slow ponderous movements and outsized oversized hump indicates the makings of a big, big bear.
As the big Manitoba bear turned his head from side to side he occasionally looked square at us.  I was watching him through the rifle scope.
I tightened the rifle sling high on my left arm and in a sitting position scooted out and down the hill a couple of yards or meters for a clear shot.  Still sitting I put the cross hairs on the bear. And danged if he was not watching me all along.  Wow I thought, maybe I am not going to get a running shot after all.  But the bear seemed completely disinterested.  I could not a shoulder, so I figured on breaking the neck.  The flat footed faithful little 270 was rock-steady on his nose – and we waited.  And waited.  Finally the bear turned his head and I touched her off.  The bear collapses as if he had been electrocuted. As a matter of fact, I had the sensation that he flopped so hard that he bounced a little.
The bear dropped spine up in some real low willows, being fall time at Lake Manitoba Narrows. The Manitoba willows partially hid the bear.
The first shot it seemed had broken his neck and jaw, and the other two the bear’s shoulders.
