Oklahoma Add Quail Study
The word “Packsaddle” can mean one thing to a Lake Manitoba “Outfitter’s ” Horse and something to researchers involved heavily with quail gamebirds.
The 15,000 acre Packsaddle Wildlife areas in western Oklahoma is said by many wildlife , waterfowl and game bird hunters to have some of the best quail habitat in the area and large scale areas. 28,0000 acres were set aside by Ornithology or Bird Biologists.
One such study dealt with the biting question as to whether in the end to feed or not feed natural quail birds in order to increase their relative and absolute numbers for hunting purposes and the purposes of those of hunters.
Biologists compared land with feeders to land without. The department equipped one area with 55 gallon feeders filled with milo. Next a control area was set up with no feeders located in its area whatsoever. All the two areas were identical with no biological or feeding differences for the quails in any ways or means.
The feeders concentrated birds for hunters, but also for predators as well. It seemed in conclusion the only time that they made any difference in survival for the quail birds was during bad weather conditions.
